Our Journey

Canner Foundation History

From a modest beginning to a thriving nonprofit organization, the Canner Foundation has been dedicated to supporting Upper Adams students for over 15 years.

The Beginning

The Canner Foundation began in March 2010 when a group of dedicated community members came together with a shared vision: to enhance educational opportunities for students in the Upper Adams School District. What started as a modest fund with an initial investment of $23,916.92 has grown into a robust foundation that continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local students and teachers.

The name "Canner" honors the rich agricultural heritage of our community, particularly the apple canning industry that has been the backbone of Biglerville and the surrounding area for generations. Just as the canning industry preserved and nurtured the fruits of our orchards, the Canner Foundation seeks to preserve and nurture the potential of our students.

Over the years, generous donations from alumni, parents, community members, local businesses, and friends have helped the foundation grow significantly. By December 2025, the fund had grown to $264,566.52—a testament to the community's commitment to education and our young people's futures.

Becoming a 501(c)(3)

In 2025, the Canner Foundation achieved a major milestone by obtaining official 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. This incorporation as a Pennsylvania nonprofit organization brought several important benefits:

  • Tax-Deductible Donations: All contributions to the foundation are now fully tax-deductible, making it easier for supporters to give generously.
  • New Grant Opportunities: As a registered nonprofit, we can now apply for foundation grants and other funding sources previously unavailable to us.
  • Enhanced Legal Protections: Our foundation status provides stronger governance structures and legal protections for long-term sustainability.
  • Increased Credibility: Official nonprofit status demonstrates our commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of donor funds.

Our Mission Continues

Throughout our history, the Canner Foundation has remained committed to two primary goals: providing classroom grants to teachers and scholarships to graduating seniors. These programs help ensure that Upper Adams students have access to enriching educational experiences and opportunities for higher education.

The Adams County Community Foundation has been our trusted partner since the beginning, professionally managing and investing our endowment funds to ensure long-term growth and stability. This partnership allows us to focus on what we do best—supporting our local students and educators.
